GREEN TIPS

Winter Moths – Recommendations for Control
This information is from a recent seminar at The Country Garden Garden Center. Because it is impractical to spray trees over 25-30 feet tall, it is more advantageous to concentrate on specimen trees, shrubs and fruit trees. Winter moths feed on deciduous trees and shrubs and adore fruit trees. Applying the proper products at the right time in the moths’ life cycle is key.
Step 1 – Late March-Early April – Apply Horticultural oil on tree trunks and branches to kill over-wintering eggs.
Step 2 – Late April through May – When caterpillars are visible, spray with either Thuricide Bt or Spinosad. Both are environmentally friendly, but do not spray when plants are in full bloom, to protect bees. Thuricide works only for the first two weeks or so that caterpillars are out. Spinosad works throughout the period. Bt is more economical to use.

If trees are defoliated by caterpillars, make sure they are watered deeply once a week if there is not enough rain. Fertilizing these stressed trees is not recommended.
