BEDFORD FARMERS CLUB

Here is a bit of history garnered from organic gardening friends who were visiting Cindy and Peter Olotka recently, They belong to the Bedford Farmers Club which was formed by a group of Bedford, NY farmers who got together in 1851 to discuss forming a club.

“The leader of the group was Judge William Jay, son of founding father John Jay. Established in 1852, the Bedford Farmers’ Club brought farmers together to act cooperatively on issues of interest to each of them. At that time nothing was known of Farm Bureau work and very little of the word “cooperation”. However, those tillers of the soil like their sturdy ancestors, did know there was strength in “union”. Their stand from that time on became a real deadly blow to the old idea that farmers could not stand together…..The long life of the Club has been brought about by its simplicity of methods, and holding meetings of the highest social character. It has always stood for neighborly helpfulness and good fellowship.”… the Farmers’ Club Documents 1927
